Shower/Restrooms Renovations: with Kitchen Flooring and Ventilation Renovations @ Honor Dormitory

Location: Marion, Ohio
Client: Ohio Department of Rehabilitation & Correction

Project:
Analyzed and researched the best retrofitting system for the reworking of the deteriorated concrete tee beams system, and for no-hands controls for shower/toilet/sink fixtures as well as lighting controls.

Details:
Part one - shower/restroom areas...problems of: deteriorating concrete pan joist structural ceiling/floor system, with exposed and rusting steel reinforcement bars; severely deteriorated terrazzo flooring in shower areas; rusted or corroded electrical light fixtures resulting from a very high volume of steam (from hot water usage) and lack of sufficient ventilation required evaluations of existing HVAC system; damaged or non-functional shower/toilet/sink controls; correct and improve flow for drainage system at showers

Part two - involved renovations to the kitchen area to correct: a deteriorating flooring system of concrete over crawl space; eliminate surface slipping from grease build up while in use; modifications to the commercial range hood set-up and airflow externally to internal; rearrangement of kitchen set-up to provide for more efficient and functionally operating areas.

Key points
Project was constructed in phases; the ability for the inmates to shower and use toilets were critically important and could not be completely interrupted. Shower/restroom part was even broken out further into phases so the supply and drainage water flows had to be restricted and zoned; retrofit concrete repair system was shown to be costly for the installation period but a cost value when considering the further deterioration and potential structural failure or worst the serious injury to an inmate.
