St. Catherine - New Multi-Purpose School Building

Client: ACG Foundation
Location: Negril, Jamaica

Project:
Current school building outside Negril is quite aged and does not sufficiently meet the programmed needs of the local educational administration. This new building shall also serve as the local community's place for emergency shelter after severe weather/storms have caused severe property damage to homes and other structures.

Details:
A new building of about 4,000 sf positioned strategically to take advantage of the breezes, natural drainage, less solar exposure on a sparsely wooded - on one side of site. Material of choice by locals was concrete block which will have cells grouted and incorporate steel to provide for a hurricane resistant structure. Emergency generator will be supplied alongside the basic electrical service. The interior plumbing will be an extension of the existing system on site.

Contractor recommends a concrete ceiling/roof assembly for added strength as well as expansion to a second story over time. Window openings will be covered with sunscreens and allow for applicable louvers. Interior finishes though austere, will be durable and add a sense of delight - through colors, textures or creative use in select areas.

National Ministry of Education will be reviewing and approving the design plans. Expectation to build starting Fall of 2011.
